The history of Odissi dance is almost 2.000 years old. Considered both a classical and devotional dance form, Odissi is graceful and sensuous, expressive and sophisticated
Odissi dance exquisitely portrays the beauty of the sacred feminine, and reflects the ancient spiritual motifs of India’s great tantric temples.
Characteristic posture of Odissi is the Tribhangi, which means "three parts break", where the dancer is moving interdependently the three parts: head, torso and pelvis. The other characteristic posture of the Dance is "Choka" that symbolizes Lord Jagganath where the dancer "breaks" softly the "square" by moving gently the torso and the head.
Stamping of the feet is involved and is very grounding, as well as the use of Mudras, beautiful hand gestures.
In this workshop we will focus more on the Choka steps and we'll learn some of the Mudras (hand gestures) and the positions of the feet (pada vedas). We will warm up and cool down with exercises and asanas from the Odissi tradition and Vinyasa Krama Yoga.
Dress code: sari or salwar kameez (or something comfortable and loose).
Cost: £13 (£10 unwaged and students).
